What is education?
To instruct through delight is one of the definitions that comes to my mind because of my literary background. But a student actually told me " Be like Hitler, that's the only thing that works with our class." Eye - opening, isn't it? And their need for high grades for admissions to universities is quite amazing because it shows that they are focused in what they want.

Koshy, that is what I mean by saying (refer to my response to Mahesh's comment on the DB) that this faith in the exam as the beall and end all of education is so deeply rooted in our societial psyche! The attitude that you are encountering in your students is reflective of just that. I reiterate that it is up to teachers who think about education to provide a comfort scaffolding to students while helping them to question what education is about.
true, tara, they need comfort/protection first and then to be led/opened up further
